The Filter You’ll Never Find
Everyone mocks the person who lets their food go cold hunting for the right Instagram filter. Everyone is also that person. I’ve cycled through every option on a meal that’s losing heat, fully aware of the hunger sitting in my stomach, choosing the shot anyway. The irony doesn’t stop you. It just makes you feel slightly worse.
Rhett & Link, the YouTube duo behind a channel built on elaborate comedy, made a song about exactly this—a catchy thing telling you to put the phone down and actually live inside your own life instead of curating and broadcasting a version of it. The discomfort of recognition is the whole joke.
What gets me isn’t the habit. It’s the awareness. I know in real time what I’m doing when I frame a shot of food going cold. I’m choosing documentation over experience, and I do it anyway. Then I scroll back through those photos months later and can’t remember what anything tasted like.
You know it won’t fix anything, but you reach for the phone anyway.
