Marteria Finds God, Briefly
How do you get to heaven? Marteria—born Marco Martinelli in Rostock, by now one of Germany’s most inventive rappers—has a proposal: his video for OMG throws everything vaguely theological into a blender and arrives somewhere that feels less like a sermon and more like a hallucination in a cathedral. Saints, sinners, ritual, spectacle. The whole vocabulary of religious intensity, stripped of actual reverence and repurposed for something more honest: a reaching toward meaning in a format that at least admits it might be wrong.
There’s always been something theatrically excessive about Marteria’s visual work, a willingness to commit fully to a concept and let it tip into the weird. OMG uses religious iconography the way pop music always does—as a shared language for feelings too large to name directly. Whether or not any of it points at something real, the images still carry weight. That’s the trick. Amen.
