The WTF Factory Never Closes

Anyone who doesn’t love Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has something missing in them—some receptor that would otherwise respond to controlled derangement. She’s been lobbing WTF moments at the world since PONPONPON arrived in 2011 and made the entire internet briefly question its grip on reality. Fashion Monster. Invader Invader. Each one its own small psychedelic emergency.

The new one is called Kira Kira Killerkira kira being Japanese for glittery, sparkling, the shimmer of light on something precious—and it does exactly what the title promises: glitter, good luck, maximum kawaii, color palettes that have no business existing in the same frame. What I keep coming back to with Kyary is that the chaos is engineered. Every prop, every costume choice is precise in its derangement. Anyone can be weird. Very few can make weird feel this inevitable, this cheerfully unstoppable. Harajuku as a complete artistic philosophy.
