Leave Her Alone

Celebrity gossip is mostly beneath engagement—I know that—and yet a tabloid story about Selena Gomez reportedly planning a breast augmentation because she’s afraid of losing Justin Bieber landed differently than I expected.

The story comes from the usual anonymous source. The logic: while they were broken up, Justin dated other women. Those women were more conventionally built than Selena. So Selena has concluded that the gap between herself and his wandering attention is a cup size. She’s been posting increasingly revealing photos on Instagram, the source says, and is seriously considering surgery—comparing herself to every woman he touched while they weren’t together, running calculations no one should have to run.

There’s a version of this that’s just tabloid slop—unverified, exaggerated, probably invented. But even as fiction it describes something real: the exhausting math women are supposed to do on their own bodies in relation to men who don’t deserve the calculation. That Selena Gomez—objectively beautiful, talented, successful—might be sitting with a Justin Bieber-shaped anxiety and a measuring tape is genuinely depressing to think about.

I don’t have a political point. Some days a stupid tabloid story lands wrong and you can’t explain why. Today was that day.
