The Retirees Are Better at This Than You

Five hours into Grand Theft Auto V on the PS4 and I still hadn’t won the first street race—the one with that unhinged guy in the souped-up import. Two hundred attempts, maybe more, every single one ending with some dumpster materializing out of nowhere to end my evening. There is always a dumpster.

Then I watched a video of a group of retirees handed a controller for the first time, and they just… played. Naturally. Better than me. Considerably better than me in some cases, with less swearing and more strategic patience. One of them seemed to genuinely enjoy the carjacking.

I’m apparently old enough to get beaten at games by people forty years my senior, but not yet old enough to find that funny. Give it time.
