Germany for Safet Babic
When you picture the average NPD supporter, you arrive fairly quickly at a specific image: some guy at a pub table, beer in both moral and literal hand, operating at a cognitive altitude that puts the word "university" firmly in the category of things that happen to other people, fucking women who bear a general resemblance to Blondi in poor lighting, his cultural diet consisting of nationalist folk-metal and whatever the tabloids told him to be furious about this week.
But Safet Babic and his three friends are different. They’re intelligent. Cultured. Sophisticated. And they want you to know it. In a carefully produced YouTube video, they hold forth on German foreign policy, the refugee question, the path to economic recovery. Measured. Thoughtful. The kind of men you’d trust with the country.
What makes this especially rich—richer than anything the NPD has produced in recent memory—is that the party’s core proposition is some variation of "Germany belongs to Germans," and here is Safet Babic, whose name suggests a rather different heritage, delivering that message with the composure of a man who has genuinely not thought this through. There is also, supporting his vision of the new Germany, a gentleman with a notable absence of teeth, who will surely go very far. Safet and his comrades have demonstrated, beyond any serious question, that the NPD is the party of Germany’s intellectual elite, its educated overclass, its cultivated vanguard. You’d have to be a real idiot not to want in.
