Pale Breeze at Black’s Beach

Off-season beaches have something summer beaches don’t. The noise is gone. The crowd has evaporated. Whatever meaning the place was supposed to hold—leisure, escape, display—drains out and leaves something quieter and stranger. A few joggers. Some dogs. The light doing whatever it wants.

Photographer Lauren Marie drove down to Black’s Beach in San Diego with model Alexandra Sweiss—AJ, to anyone who knows her—and shot a series called Pale Breeze that catches exactly this mood. Black’s Beach is the nude beach below Torrey Pines, accessible by a cliff trail that filters out the uncommitted. They shot topless. Lauren described it as pretty liberating. The goal was to capture the approaching winter: the cold moving in, the light going flat, the season ending whether you’re ready or not.

AJ has one of those presences that makes a location feel chosen rather than incidental. Something about her and the grey November light and the empty sand makes the series feel less like a photo set and more like documentation of a specific afternoon that happened and is now gone. Lauren Marie shoots like she knows that distinction matters.
