Your Depraved Inner Monologue, Rendered in 256 Colors

Margaret Thatcher in full Valkyrie costume, mounted on an enormous erect penis, soaring through a thunderstorm. That image exists. Someone asked for it, a man named Jim received the request, and Jim delivered—faithfully, in Microsoft Paint, with the wobbly, committed lines that only that software produces.

The premise has no fine print: describe what you want, and Jim draws it. Donald Trump, visibly coked up and vomiting, on the White House toilet? Done. Sonic the Hedgehog spending his last hours in a grimy biker bar? Done. The Valkyrie Thatcher, fully airborne, compositionally committed? Done, and it holds together better than it has any right to.

What I love about Jim is the complete absence of gatekeeping. The stuff that flickers through your head at 2 a.m.—the wrong combinations, the absurd mashups, the images you’d be embarrassed to admit you imagined—all of it is fair game. He doesn’t editorialize. He just draws. And somehow within the constraints of Microsoft Paint, with its limited palette and clunky tools, a genuine style emerges: something between outsider art and deliberately committed comedy.

His Tumblr is one of those corners of the internet that makes the whole messy project feel worthwhile. Pure id, in 256 colors.
