Sixteen Ways to Remember a Perfect Moment
Basketball has always been the most painterly of sports—all that space, all that improvised geometry, bodies caught in configurations that exist for half a second before they dissolve. It makes a kind of sense that someone would want to freeze it.
Art of a Champion took sixteen career-defining performances from sixteen players and commissioned sixteen artists to interpret them. The exhibition opened at the KICKZ store on Torstraße in Berlin, backed by Nike, Jordan, and Converse, which puts it in the slightly uneasy territory between gallery wall and retail floor. But the work holds up in the space.
Standing in front of a painting of a moment you already carry in your head is a strange experience. You know what it looks like—you’ve seen the footage, the photographs—and then an artist hands you their version of it, filtered through a completely different set of tools, and something shifts. The frozen moment becomes something else. Not better necessarily. Just seen again, from somewhere new.
