Zazie Beetz Could Make Me Watch Anything

Fell asleep during the first Deadpool. Not at the end—somewhere in the middle, which means I was actually enjoying it right up until I wasn’t. Some combination of fatigue, weed, and pizza, probably, which describes a fair number of my evenings. I didn’t feel any particular urgency to revisit it. There are too many other films backed up in the queue, and I figured I’d get to it eventually or I wouldn’t.

Then the final trailer for Deadpool 2 arrived, and I had to revise my entire position in about thirty seconds. Not because of Ryan Reynolds—obviously great, obviously the engine of the whole thing—but because of one specific character: Domino. I am absolutely, helplessly, embarrassingly gone on Domino. And by extension on Zazie Beetz, who plays her with this loose, unbothered confidence that reads as completely effortless even when she’s clearly doing something technically difficult.

Luck as a superpower is either the laziest idea in comics or a genuinely funny subversion of the whole genre, and based on the trailer, this version of Domino understands the joke. Deadpool telling her that luck isn’t a real power while she proceeds to survive everything around her—that’s actually a good bit. I’ll show up for that.

Deadpool 2 opened in May 2018. I went. For certain reasons.
